Closure of ’smaller’ of Two Devens Massachusetts Packaging Plant

Filed under: Layoffs & Closures — xgillette @ 8:20 pm

May 23, 2006 Gillette announced the closure of a small packaging operation in Devens, eliminating about 100 jobs. The plant is expected to close by Oct 2006.

The "pack to order" operation, which caters to retailers that need special packaging or displays for promotional reasons, will be relocated to Greensboro, N.C., said Gillette spokesman Eric Kraus.

Devens is also home to a larger packaging center in Devens, employing about 1,000 people.  The fate of this plant is undetermined, but the writing is clearly on the wall.

The interesting thing about the announcement is that it was announced on a local Boston radio station prior to any offical announcements.  So much for effective communication about merger activities.

Gillette Superstars Flown to Cincinnati

Filed under: Layoffs & Closures — xgillette @ 3:52 pm

Dec 1, 2005

Over the last couple of weeks several dozen “potential” candidates were flown from Boston to Cincinnati. Procter and Gamble trying to avoid a complete brain drain decided to bring these individuals out to see the facilities and sites, and to speak with P&G management. During the visit “some” of the Gillette employees were made offers for employement, while other’s were told that P&G was interested in having them stay on, but that there were no jobs for them at this time. The latter still better than those employees who, at the same time back home, were notified that there services were no longer required.

P&G has stated that all employees would know their fate within 6 months of the October 1 merger date. Starting with Gillette’s top executives, P&G has been working its way down through the organization.

The news given to Gillette employees can range from permanent job offers, to transitional job offers for up to several years, to notification that the job has been eliminated. When that happens, the employee could be given a chance at another job or offered a separation package.

Raymond Buse III, a spokesman for the Greater Cincinnati Chamber of Commerce, said his office has provided Procter & Gamble with “hundreds” of relocation packages, as requested, to help with the Gillette takeover.

The packets include information about Cincinnati’s culture and housing, to prospective residents. He said the chamber also provided a few dozen T-shirts with the region’s new slogan, “Cincinnati USA: All together surprising.”

These packets are for “potential” Gillette transfers.

By April 1, all Gillette employees affected by the merger will know their status with the company.
